Biography
Matthew is a dual fellowship-trained specialist adult and paediatric Interventional Radiologist in Melbourne, Australia, with advanced expertise in embolisation and image-guided ablation procedures, having performed several thousand operative cases to date. Dr Matthew Lukies completed his medical degree with honours at Monash University, followed by internship and residency training at Austin Health and Northern Health. He also gained international experience at Osaka University Hospital. He completed specialist Radiology and Interventional Radiology training at Alfred Health, a major tertiary referral centre for complex endovascular and minimally invasive procedures. He further developed subspecialty expertise in women’s and paediatric interventional radiology during time working overseas at a specialist tertiary women's and children's hospital in Singapore, and has completed the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) exam.
Matthew has a compassionate and patient-centred approach to clinical interventional radiology practice, including counselling and follow-up care. Dr Lukies is passionate about providing patients with the full range of treatment options, including modern minimally invasive IR procedures where suitable, and empowering patients in their choices in both the public and private settings. Dr Lukies was the first to perform thyroid nodule ablation at the Alfred Hospital and Monash Health after advocating for its inclusion as an Interventional Radiology (IR) treatment option.
Dr Lukies completed a Master of Medicine by research at the University of Melbourne. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles in interventional radiology and is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery (Interventional Radiology) at Monash University. He presents regularly at national and international conferences and has been recognised with numerous prizes including the Young Investigator Award at the Asia-Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology 2024 conference, Best Interventional Radiology Presentation Award at the Singapore College of Radiology 2024 conference, and Best Ablation Presentation at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists 2025 conference.
